And no one was more saddened by the news than his wife, popular TV host and actress Kris Aquino, who encouraged her husband to accept the invitation to try out for the national squad.

In an article published on July 29 in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, veteran sports columnist Beth Celis, wrote that Kris

expressed sadness when the news was relayed to her while shooting a Pampers commercial with the couple's infant son, Baby James.

James, according to Kris, took the entire decision "like a man" and assured her that he's totally fine. In fact, it was James consoled Kris when she learned about the outcome.

"But I'd be lying if I tell you (that) I'm happy. Of course I'm disappointed because I was the one who really encouraged James to accept the invitation, although we were both aware right from the start that there were no guarantees he'd be taken in," relayed Kris to Celis.

Former President Cory Aquino was also saddened by the news as she was more excited with the thought of seeing her son-in-law donning the national colors to represent the country in an international competition.

"My mom got sad when she heard the news because it meant a lot to her for James to be part of the team that would represent our country. She even called him before his flight to wish him good luck," continued Kris.
